Abstract deadline: Keystone Symposia - New Insights into the Biology of Exercise

Exercise and regular physical activity are widely recognized to be important for maintaining overall health and wellness. Furthermore, exercise has been proven to be an effective therapy for the prevention and treatment of a variety of diseases including diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. The physiological response of selected tissues, such as skeletal muscle, heart, liver, adipose, and brain to exercise has been studied to varying degrees in healthy and unhealthy individuals; however, the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the acute responses and training adaptations to exercise remain poorly defined. The study of exercise is not a new field but is receiving increased interest because of the many health-promoting benefits of regular aerobic and resistance exercise. This conference includes selected speakers who can present new findings related to the response of multiple organs/tissues (skeletal muscle, liver, adipose tissue, heart, vascular, brain) to exercise in both animal models and humans. The overarching goals for the conference are to 1) encourage discussion of the integrative multiple organ response to exercise, 2) encourage discussion and integration of basic and translational research, and 3) provide an environment for investigators to network and initiate new collaborations.

Scholarship Application Deadline Deadline: Keystone Symposium - Integrating Metabolism and Immunity

Traditionally, metabolism and immunity have been perceived as two distinct systems with distinct functions: metabolism regulates the disposal and transformation of nutrients, whereas the immune system is responsible for host defense. However, in a broader sense, these two processes are both an organism’s response to stressors, with the aim of restoring homeostasis. An increasing amount of evidence has demonstrated that the chronic activation of the immune system associated with overnutrition may be deleterious, contributing importantly to diabetes and long-term complications, such as cardiovascular disorders. Such dysregulation of the immune system may reflect the duration and magnitude of the metabolic stress, along with genetic predispositions. Accordingly, anti-inflammatory treatments of metabolic diseases emerge as therapies interfering with the pathogenesis of these illnesses and offer disease-modifying potential. Therefore, it is critical that clinical translation be based on an understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of the role of the immune system in metabolism. This conference will bring together basic scientists and clinicians from both disciplines in order to spark innovative ways of understanding the interactions between the immune system and metabolism. The conference organizers anticipate that the conference will lead to the development of novel therapeutic concepts based on the pathways underlying the pathogenesis of diseases rather than on the manifestation of symptoms belonging to a specific clinical discipline.

JAX Webinar: Generating Better Mouse Models for Your Research: Approaches and Considerations

Do you need a unique mouse model that does not exist or is not available? Mouse model generation is more accessible and cost-effective than ever, but the number of options of background strains and techniques adds some complexity to the process. During this webinar, we will discuss approaches and considerations for mouse model generation, including:
  • Strategies to generate indel, knockout, and knockin mutations using CRISPR/Cas9, transgenics, and ES cells
  • Choosing the optimal genetic background for your new mouse model
  • Selecting founder mice, breeding strategies, and phenotyping
  • Streamlining new model generation using The Jackson Laboratory’s expertise and services

PKDnetwork webinar: Major Depressive Disorder in Chronic Kidney Disease

The burden of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) for patients is multifactorial, including having psychiatric consequences such as Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). While the interplay between the two is not clearly defined, both CKD and MDD can impact medical outcomes. In this discussion, Drs. Bojrab (a psychiatrist) and Kang (a nephrologist) will discuss the challenges and opportunities for patients with these comorbid conditions.

Keystone Symposium Abstract Deadline: A Gut-Systemic Perspective for Metabolic Disease

Changes of the microbiome and nutrient sensing within the gut alter whole-body glucose and energy homeostasis. The underlying mechanism and the therapeutic potential of such metabolic regulation in diabetes, obesity, and related disorders remain largely unexplored. This Keystone Symposia conference aims to progressively highlight a spectrum of basic and translational investigations and discoveries that first focus on microbial-host interaction and nutrient sensing mechanisms. Other sessions focus on the interaction between the gut microbiome and nutrient sensing pathways as well as how these pathways could be targeted by small molecules and/or immunological responses within the gut to impact systemic organs and whole-body metabolic homeostasis. In summary, we anticipate this conference will foster interactions between the basic, translational, clinical and pharmaceutical researchers and promote collaborative work aimed at realizing the therapeutic potential of targeting the gut microbiota-nutrient sensing axis for the treatment of metabolic disorders.

Funding Opportunity Application Due Date: MMPC MICROMouse Program

The MMPC MICROMouse Program is a competitive grants program awarding up to $75,000 (total costs) for one year to fund research projects that have the potential to enhance and advance the mission of the MMPC as a resource for scientists using mice to study diabetes and obesity. Any independent investigator, including post-doctoral fellows, is eligible to apply. A project must be either: 1) resource-development (e.g., develop, improve, miniaturize, teach, distribute, etc. phenotyping tests for use in mice); or 2) resource-related research (e.g., a new, currently unfunded project where results have potential impact for mouse centered research in diabetes or obesity, particularly those focused on broad biological questions that impact the ability of the MMPC to meet its goals). There is no formal deadline associated with MICROMouse applications, but applications will be reviewed quarterly (March 1, June 1, September 1, December 1) and therefore should be submitted accordingly.

NIDDK Funding Opportunity Application Due Date: Understanding the Functional Contributions and Mechanisms of Type 2 Diabetes Disease-associated Variants (UM1 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications from integrative teams and individual investigators for large-scale complex multi-disciplinary Functional Genomics Projects (FGPs) to determine the contributions and mechanisms underlying the contribution of risk-associated variants and their downstream effector transcripts for type 2 diabetes (T2D). The intent is to generate knowledge and tools to enable the identification of putative biomarkers and therapeutic targets by future efforts. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and other genomic studies of T2D and its complications have found many variants that are statistically associated with disease risk, disease protection, progression to complications, or other traits. However, such studies do not show which variants in genomic elements cause these effects or how they result in differences in function. Applications submitted to this RFA will systematically identify causal variants and effector transcripts associated with all known T2D risk variants, verify the role of downstream effector transcripts, build network models that explain their role(s) in T2D and its complications, and identify key readouts and modulation points in these networks. Data, tools, and reagents generated by these projects will be released rapidly to facilitate more in-depth study by the broad scientific community. Awardees to this announcement will form a Consortium with the Accelerating Medicines Partnership in Type 2 Diabetes Knowledge Portal awardee (AMP T2D KP; RFA-DK-19-505) to accomplish collective goals.

The Catalyst Award in Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases (Catalyst-DEMD) is designed to complement NIDDK's traditional, investigator-initiated grant programs by supporting individual scientists who propose pioneering and transformational studies in DEMD topic areas. Applications should be focused on major scientific challenges, and have the potential to produce an unusually high impact on diseases and conditions that are central to the mission of NIDDK's Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases. To be considered responsive to this initiative, the proposed research should reflect new and novel scientific directions that are distinct from concepts and approaches being pursued in the investigator’s research program or elsewhere.
