- dkNET Summer of Data Student Internship - dkNET is launching the 6-week dkNET Summer of Data Student Internship program, to provide students an opportunity to utilize the dkNET tools and resources in a research project and to provide feedback on their experience to the dkNET team. dkNET will provide up to five (5) $5,000 awards to support a summer internship for either high school, undergraduate or graduate (Masters or PhD) students to support their research using the dkNET information portal. Application due date: April 5, 2019.

Keystone Symposia - Diabetes: Innovations, Outcomes and Personaliz ed Therapies (X3)
Diabetes: Innovations, Outcomes and Personalized Therapies (X3 ) joint with the meeting on Unraveling the Secrets of Kidney Disease (X4) March 3-7, 2019 Whistler Conference Centre, Whistler, British Columbia, Canada Supported by the Directors' Fund Diabetes remains a public health challenge of epidemic proportions. Modern treatment algorithms are evolving to recommend higher focus on personalized approaches to diabetes care. However, as diabetes remains a disease characterized by excess elevation of a plasma biomarker, glucose, further refinement of our understanding of the disease and its comorbidities is required to provide optimal guidance for precision medicine. Advancement of research technologies and the ability to handle large data sets have enabled systems biology approaches to unravel different etiologies and pathophysiological consequences of diabetes. Future diabetes discovery efforts will focus on pairing knowledge about genetic risk and environmental triggers of diabetes associated pathologies. Using deep phenome characterization and molecular network analyses diabetes researchers will be able to launch modern translational approaches to diabetes care innovation. The objectives of the conference are to provide directional guidance for future pressure points of diabetes care and put emphasis on specific diabetes complications representing particular unmet needs. Further, forefront discoveries of genetic risk determinants and their molecular mechanisms will be presented together with lively debetes about the translatability of such insights to novel curative therapies. Keynote Symposia: Unraveling the Secrets of Kidney Disease
Close to 1 in 11 people in the world suffers from kidney disease. The incidence of kidney disease is increasing especially in the developing world. This issue was recently reviewed and emphasized in a Lancet article (Global Health Atlas). Acute and chronic kidney disease is associated with a highly significant increase in cardiovascular death. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) represents a leading cause of death in the United States. There is no cure for this disease, with current treatment strategies relying on blood pressure control through blockade of the renin-angiotensin system. Such approaches only delay the development of end-stage kidney disease and can be associated with serious side effects. Recent identification of several novel mechanisms contributing to CKD development - including vascular changes, loss of podocytes and renal epithelial cells, matrix deposition, inflammation and metabolic dysregulation - has revealed new potential therapeutic approaches for CKD. This meeting will review clinical and observational studies in the kidney disease area, highlight recent advances in basic biology of kidney and kidney disease, assesses emerging strategies and agents for CKD treatment, and discuss major obstacles in drug development. This meeting will also encourage collaborations among clinicians and researchers from academic institutes and pharmaceutical laboratories and accelerate innovation in this field. There has not been a meeting in the area in kidney disease that would bring together clinicians, basic scientists and industry and foster collaboration. Small focus meetings have been organized by the International Society of Nephrology, but these meetings are limited to a single special topic. Furthermore more than half of kidney disease is caused by diabetes, this meeting will have the opportunity to understand diabetes and its complications development. Location: Whistler, BC V0N, Canada

Gordon Research Conference: The Impact of IGF and Insulin on Life-Long Health
The 2019 Gordon Research Conference on the IGF and Insulin System in Physiology and Disease will showcase innovative, cutting-edge research on the fundamental roles of IGF and insulin in normal physiology and in diseases particularly related to aging, cancer and metabolic disorders. IGFs and insulin are conserved throughout evolution to mediate the effects of nutrition on growth, metabolism and development, and hence play a major role in health and disease over the lifespan. They modulate diverse aspects of cell function such as proliferation, differentiation, survival and metabolism of most physiological systems in the body. The IGF family of ligands, receptors and IGF binding proteins are frequently disturbed in many pathological conditions, such as growth failure, diabetes, cancer and dege nerative diseases, and therefore have become attractive therapeutic targets. This conference will encompass ground-breaking information regarding key characteristics of the biology of the IGF/insulin family in both normal physiology and in pathological states highlighting innovative methodologies and novel interactions (e.g. stem cell biology and the microbiome). The goal of this conference is to bring together scientists at every level from dif ferent disciplines to interact during programmed topic sessions and informal gatherings to discuss new and seminal findings with experts in the field. The GRC will also include a GRC Power Hour that will be open to all meeting participants and will address the challenges women face in science. The conference will be preceded by a two-day Gordon Research Seminar for scienti sts in training. All these opportunities will support professional growth of younger scientists that will promote future collaborations and enhance participation and contribution to this exciting field. Application deadline: Gordon Research Conference: Multi-Drug Efflux Systems -Translating Multifaceted Molecular Mechanisms into Pharmacological Interventions for Advancing Global Health
This conference will include presentations on key developments across a broad spectrum of topics covering the multiple roles of efflux transporter pumps in health and disease. The impact of the explosion of structural data from cryo-EM on our molecular understanding of the substrate selectivity and regulation of the transport of molecules across cell membranes will be highlighted. Speakers will discuss the role of multidrug efflux pumps as barriers to harmful xenobiotics, including roles in protecting the CNS, the fetus and the reproductive organs. The program will also include talks on the interrelatedness between pharmacological targeting of efflux pumps and systemic toxicity and key strategies for CNS penetration for the treatment of neurodegeneration and other neurological disorders in the scope of aging-related diseases. A discussion of how microbial strategies for drug resistance can be harnessed for reversing the current crises in the treatment of malaria, multidrug extensively resistant tuberculosis and multidrug resistance in Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria is planned. How the antimicrobial war can be supported by a healthy microbiome and the importance of transport and signaling among biofilms will also be subject of intense debate. Overall, this conference will foster discussion at the frontiers of science in multi-drug efflux systems for advancing global health and the UN Sustainable Development Goals envisaging a world with equitable and universal access to quality education and health care, where physical, mental and social well-being are assured. Funding Opportunity Application Due Date: MMPC MICROMouse Program
The MMPC MICROMouse Program is a competitive grants program awa rding up to $75,000 (total costs) for one year to fund research projects that have the potential to enhance and advance the mission of the MMPC as a resource for scientists using mice to study diabetes and obesity. Any independent investigator, including post-doctoral fellows, is eligible to apply. A project must be either: 1) resource-development (e.g., develop, improve, miniaturize, teach, distribute, etc. phenotyping tests for use in mice); or 2) resource-related research (e.g., a new, currently unfunded project where results have potential impact for mouse centered research in diabetes or obesity, particularly those focused on broad biological questions that impact the ability of the MMPC to meet its goals). There is no for mal deadline associated with MICROMouse applications, but applications will be reviewed quarterly (March 1, June 1, September 1, December 1) and therefore should be submitted accordingly. The purpose of the KUH/NIDDK Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Fellow Transition Award (F99/K00) is to recruit exceptional graduate students who are recognized by their institutions for their high potential and to incentivize them to pursue a Kidney, Urologic or Hematologic (K, U, or H) postdoctoral position that ultimately positions them to become independent K, U, or H researchers. This two-phase award will facilitate completion of t he doctoral dissertation and stabilize the transition of highly talented Ph.D candidates from a variety of fields, including, but not limited to, engineering, statistics, data science, imaging, biochemistry and genetics into strong postdoctoral appointments that are focused on K, U, or H re search. It is anticipated that successful completion of this phased award will make the individual highly competitive for a subsequent NIDDK award (e .g., K99/R00, R01). Opportunities for career development activities relevant to their long-term career goals of becoming independent researchers will be provided.
