dkNET community events and announcements in December, 2017

Dear dkNET Community,

dkNET provides updates on activities of interest to the NIDDK-supported community. You could keep up to date on these activities through our Twitter feed @dkNET_info, through our Community Calendar, or through dkNET e-mail list. If you have an event or funding opportunities you'd like to advertise, please contact us info_at_dknet.org.

dkNET Updates:

  • New research tools added to dkNET

Chemoproteomic identification and therapeutic validation of proteins of metabolic significance (RRID: SCR_015847) is a database portal for a project that aims to discover and characterize new molecular pathways that can be targeted pharmacologically to revert obesity-linked adipocyte defects that drive systemic insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. It works to identify in tandem physiologically-relevant proteins and chemical tools in order to expedite their functional annotation and therapeutic validation.

CalR (RRID:SCR_015849) is a web application for indirect calorimetry analysis. CalR generates customizable time, bar and regression plots for calorimetry data using two-, three-, and four-group templates.

Alliance of Genome Resources (RRID:SCR_015850) is an organization that aims to develop and maintain sustainable genome information resources to promote understanding of the genetic and genomic basis of human biology, health, and disease. The Alliance is composed of FlyBase, Mouse Genome Database (MGD), the Gene Ontology Consortium (GOC), Saccharomyces Genome Database (SGD), Rat Genome Database (RGD), WormBase, and the Zebrafish Information Network (ZFIN).

The 2017 TERMIS-AM (“The Path Forward for Regenerative Medicine: Traversing the Lab to the Patient") Annual Conference and Exhibition

The TERMIS-AM Meeting is the key annual meeting held in the Americas each year, and brings together researchers, scientists, trainees, and students from both academia and industry to discuss critical developments in the field. The meeting is led by keynote speakers each day, and consists of parallel technical sessions as well as poster presentations. A strong role in the meeting planning and execution will be played by the TERMIS-AM Student and Young Investigator Section (SYIS). Furthermore, there will be an emphasis on promoting the careers of women and underrepresented groups in the tissue engineering and regenerative medicine fields.

Location: Charlotte, NC, USA

Regenerative Medicine Innovation Workshop: Focus on Adult Stem Cells hosted by NIH and FDA

The 21st Century Cures Act, passed in December 2016, establishes a Regenerative Medicine Innovation Project to accelerate the field by supporting clinical research on adult stem cells while promoting the highest standards for carrying out scientific research and protecting patient safety. For more information about the Regenerative Medicine Innovation Project, visit www.nih.gov/RMI. On December 6-7, 2017, the NIH and FDA will be hosting a Regenerative Medicine Innovation Workshop at the Bethesda North Marriott & Convention Center. The purpose of the workshop is to explore the state of regenerative medicine science involving adult stem cells with a focus on approaches to the development of safe and effective products. The draft agenda can be viewed at the Materials tab of this website. With a focus on the development of safe and effective regenerative medicine (RM) products, the workshop will identify critical gaps that must be addressed to enable significant innovation and rapid advancement of RM approaches and will explore issues related to product development and standards, regulatory science, and clinical applications. The framework for sessions in six scientific fields is a set of key questions designed to identify the scientific, technical, and operational challenges as well as to highlight strategies for enabling major transformative advances and the development of clinical applications using adult stem cells. These challenges and opportunities will be explored through the lens of scientific overviews and case studies of clinical science and product development in specific scientific areas that will serve as springboards for in-depth discussions while emphasizing cross-cutting issues with broad applicability to many areas of RM clinical research.

Early bird registration deadline: 2018 JDRF nPOD 10th Annual Scientific Meeting

The Network for Pancreatic Organ Donors with Diabetes (nPOD) is proud to host its 10th Annual Meeting at The Diplomat Beach Resort, February 20-23, 2018. Over the past eleven years, JDRF nPOD has made remarkable strides in terms of meeting its organizational goals. Key amongst these include seeing its investigators make discoveries that help answer the question of, “What causes type 1 diabetes?” We anticipate the 2018 meeting will continue to foster meaningful collaborations towards that goal through directed topic presentations and discussions.
