KUH Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium

This meeting is the culminating experience for the undergraduate participants sponsored by the Division of Kidney, Urologic, and Hematologic Diseases Summer Research Experience Programs and Kidney Technology Development Research Education Programs. The conference will bring all students together to share their research accomplishments, network with peers and distinguished faculty, and receive timely career development advice. This added exposure to professional and scientific opportunities in renal, urologic, and hematologic diseases will encourage undergraduates to continue their medical or graduate careers in areas within the NIDDK research mission. This year's conference will be held in-person.

Submission Deadline: 2023 DataWorks! Prize

The 2023 DataWorks! Prize(link is external) Challenge is underway, building off the successes of its first year. The challenge is sponsored by the NIH Office of Data Science Strategy, in partnership with the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB)(link is external). This year’s prize will focus on best-practice “recipes” that advance biological and biomedical research activities by prioritizing practices that enable robust data management during the research process. This will enable the creation of an ongoing archive of best practices and resources that can be used by researchers to facilitate better data storage, sharing, and reuse. This year’s prize offers up to 16 NIH-funded monetary awards, totaling up to $500,000, and up to two People’s Choice Awards, as determined by FASEB. Submissions will be evaluated based on:
  • Excellence in Data Sharing and Reuse
  • Innovative Impact on Human Health
  • Excellence in Communication and Adoption of Practices Outside of Original Context

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Foundation Funding Opportunity Pre-Application Due: 2024 PKD Foundation Research Grant

The PKD Foundation’s principal mission is to support basic, translational, and clinical research that will benefit patients with autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD and ARPKD). Under this RFA, the PKD Foundation solicits research grant applications in the following areas: (1) Basic research — to enhance understanding of molecular basis of PKD and its pathobiology (2) Translational research — to accelerate development of predictive and therapeutic strategies for PKD (3) Clinical research — such as small pilot studies (4) Epidemiology/data analysis research — to conduct secondary data analyses utilizing existing database resources, or to develop new statistical methodologies or test hypotheses using existing data. NIH Funding Opportunity Application Due: Specialized Centers of Research Excellence (SCORE) on Sex Differences (U54 Clinical Trial Optional)

The ORWH and participating organizations and institutes seek applications for Specialized Centers of Research Excellence (SCORE) on Sex Differences. The Centers of Excellence will support interdisciplinary approaches to advance translational research on sex differences. Each SCORE institution should develop a research agenda bridging basic and clinical research underlying a health issue that is pertinent to improving the health of women.

ISAC Award Seed funding for exceptionally innovative, disruptive (high-risk/high-reward) research relevant to KUH communities that has the potential to lead to groundbreaking or paradigm-shifting results that will change the field. ISAC awards are NOT Pilot & Feasibility projects for the generation of more preliminary data for traditional NIH applications (e.g., R01). NIH Funding Opportunity Application Due: Lasker Clinical Research Scholars Program (Si2/R00 Clinical Trial Optional)

This NOFO encourages applications for the Lasker Clinical Research Scholars Program for the purpose of supporting the research activities during the early stage careers of independent clinical researchers. The program offers the opportunity for a unique bridge between the NIH intramural and extramural research communities and contains two phases. In the first phase, Lasker Scholars will receive appointments for up to 5-7 years as tenure-track investigators within the NIH Intramural Research Program with independent research budgets. In the second phase, successful scholars will receive up to 3 years of NIH support for their research at an extramural research facility; or, the Scholar can be considered to remain as an investigator within the intramural program.

NIDDK Funding Opportunity Letter of Intent Due: NIDDK Catalyst Award (DP1 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

The NIDDK Catalyst Award is designed to complement NIDDK's traditional, investigator-initiated grant programs by supporting individual scientists who propose pioneering and transformational studies in topic areas of interest to NIDDK's Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases, and to NIDDK's Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition. Applications should be focused on major scientific challenges and have the potential to produce an unusually high impact on diseases and conditions that are central to the mission of these two divisions within NIDDK. To be considered responsive to this initiative, the proposed research should reflect new and novel scientific directions that are distinct from concepts and approaches being pursued in the investigator’s research program or elsewhere. NIDDK Funding Opportunity Application Due: Human Liver Tissue and Hepatocytes Resource-Related Research Project (R24 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to support a Human Liver Tissue and Hepatocytes Research Resource (HLTHRR) program to enable the continued availability of human liver tissue and hepatocytes to biomedical researchers. The research resource is expected to facilitate the procurement and preservation of human liver tissue and hepatocytes as well as the distribution of these materials to qualified biomedical researchers. The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH.  The overarching goal of this R25 program is to support educational activities that complement and/or enhance the training of a workforce to meet the nation’s biomedical, behavioral and clinical research needs.To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this NOFO will support educational activities with a primary focus on: Research Experiences. This NOFO solicits applications to establish summer research programs for qualified undergraduates and recent post-baccalaureates to participate in summer research experiences relevant to the mission of the Division of Kidney, Urologic and Hematologic Diseases/NIDDK (NIDDK/KUH).
