NIDDK Investigators received a supplemental award from NIH ODSS to improve AI/ML-readiness of T1D research data

Here is the information from NIDDK:

"NIDDK investigators Dr. Raghu Mirmira at the University of Chicago and Dr. Bobbie-Jo Webb-Robertson at the Pacific Northwest National Lab (PNNL) received a supplemental award of $401,273 from the NIH Office of Data Science Strategy (ODSS) to improve the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML)-readiness of data generated by their project titled “The Integrated Stress Response in Human Islets During Early T1D” (U01DK127786).

The parent project is part of the Consortium on Beta Cell Death and Survival (CBDS),  the Human Islet Research Network (HIRN).  Dr. Mirmira currently also co-leads the Chicago Diabetes Research & Training Center (DRTC) funded by the NIDDK.

The parent project is collecting a large suite of heterogenous data, such as mRNA, lipidomics, proteomics and immunologic measurements, and using AI/ML to extract a multi-biomarker panel to aid in stratifying stress in human islets and translating these findings to individuals at-risk for T1D and new-onset T1D.  The supplement will support an effort led by MPI Dr. Bobbie-Jo Webb-Robertson at the PNNL to make the data ready for AL-ML, and to develop and test novel AI/ML approaches to tackle data pre-processing challenges and to extract molecular signatures of T1D.

The ODSS is leading the implementation of NIH Strategic Plan for Data Science released in June 2018. This award was made through a funding opportunity titled Administrative Supplements to Support Collaborations to Improve the AI/ML-Readiness of NIH-Supported Data (NOT-OD-22-067)”, which was part of a string of ODSS-led initiatives aimed at catalyzing new opportunities in AI and data science.  This year, ODSS released 3 supplemental funding opportunities additional to this one, to support Ethical Development and Use of AI/ML , Fair data repositories, and Enhancement of software tools for open science.
