Fourth Artificial Pancreas Workshop: Testing and Adoption of Current and Emerging Technologies
The purpose of this workshop is to have a multidisciplinary discussion of current and emerging systems and their components, including integration strategies, clinical testing modalities, psychosocial and usability factors, regulatory and reimbursement considerations, and prospective areas of research to accelerate the availability of a wearable, affordable, and user-friendly artificial pancreas (AP) for individuals with diabetes.

Compressive Omics: Making Big Data Manageable through Data Compression
The conference is organized by the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB). This session will introduce the audience to new and exciting software and accompanying algorithmic developments in data compression and their application in genomics, structural biology, biological networks, and biomedical image analysis. The speakers will seek community input and feedback about requirements for software and suggestions for new applications.The attendees will also have the opportunity to learn about NIH’s perspective on the software needs of the biomedical community, based on detailed information on the projects recently funded by the BD2K program.

Abstract submission deadline: ISG-2016 The Islet Study Group Meeting
The meeting will take place directly after the EASD Conference (Sept 13-16th) and just before the annual Nature Medicine – Helmholtz Diabetes Conference (Sept 18-20th) in Munich. Transportation from Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen will be organized for the attendees of the EASD. The Islet Study Group focuses on pancreatic islet biology and its relevance to diabetes. The meeting will cover topics: Islet cell development and differentiation, Stress and failure of pancreatic islets, Human islet biology and genetics, Islet cell physiology, signaling and metabolism and Islet cell regeneration. This meeting will bring together expert faculty and young investigators to exchange the latest concepts and data, as well as providing excellent networking prospects.

Hemodialysis Vascular Access Roundtable
In September 2015 the NIDDK held a workshop on hemodialysis vascular access (Hemodialysis Vascular Access: Taking the Next Steps) to identify future directions in clinical and basic research. To continue the process of identifying clinically important research to improve hemodialysis vascular access in the U.S. hemodialysis patient population the Institute will hold a second meeting, A Roundtable on Clinical Research for Hemodialysis Vascular Access, in the summer of 2016. Selected participants of the roundtable will be asked to present their two most important (highest priority) clinical research studies to move the field forward. The proposed studies will be discussed in depth by all attendees, and at the end of the meeting a prioritized list will be established. Participants of this meeting will include clinical researchers, leaders of large dialysis organizations and representatives from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute, Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality, Department of Veterans Affairs, the Food and Drug Administration, professional societies for kidney disease and advocacy groups for patients with chronic kidney disease, among others. Registration deadline: July 15, 2016.

Pilot Clinical Trials in Pediatric Chronic Kidney Disease Workshop
Much has been learned about the natural history of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in children, but few therapies have been tested in a robust way. There is a need to assess potential novel treatments through pilot studies to determine the optimal design for a definitive, full-scale trial. The need includes therapies to slow or reverse disease progression, as well as therapies to ameliorate the many comorbidities associated with pediatric CKD. While FDA allows some extrapolation of data from adult studies for drug labeling, the differences in both disease etiology and age-specific comorbidities require appropriate studies in the appropriate population. This workshop will explore some potential therapeutic target areas for children with CKD. Registration deadline: July 14, 2016.

Chronic Pancreatitis in the 21ST Century Workshop
The purpose of the planned workshop is to explore these advances, inform the community of clinician investigators, and identify research gaps that might shape future funding initiatives by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and other agencies. The 1-day workshop will be open to the public and will be held at the University Club on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh immediately prior to the start of the annual PancreasFest meeting on July 27, 2016. The workshop will consist of a number of invited expert speakers and moderators who will explore topics chosen by a multidisciplinary organizing committee.

RBK (ReBuilding a Kidney) Partnership Projects Funding Opportunity Application Due Date
RBK (ReBuilding a Kidney) Partnership Projects are requested to add value and complement ongoing studies in the RBK Consortium and must not duplicate ongoing studies. Each Partnership Project will receive funding for 1 year but may be renewed for a second year depending on progress and programmatic priority and need. The four areas for current funding are as follows:
Development of protocols for single cell analysis of human renal biopsy specimens. Protocols may involve tissue in situ analyses or digestion of specimens into single cells for transcriptional or proteomic analysis.
Profiling and validation of normal adult kidney cell types isolated from human tissue using FACS, laser-capture or other approaches. Omic profiling of kidney cell types will inform in vitro and in vivo efforts to recreate or regenerate these cell types within the RBK Consortium and provide the research community with detailed expression profiles of specific kidney cell types.
Development of protocols for proteomic profiling of kidney cell types using platforms amenable to single cell analysis (flow cytometry, microfluidics, mass cytometry or chemical cytometry) and/or the development of proteomic imaging methods at the single cell level (e.g., SWITCH, systems-wide control of interaction time and kinetics of chemicals, CyTOF mass cytometry, etc.).
Bioengineering specific components of the kidney (e.g., convoluted proximal tubule, collecting duct, interstitium, etc.), including incorporation of appropriate cell types. Cell types may be informed by the RBK Consortium

NIH NIDDK Funding Opportunity Application Due Date: Pragmatic Research in Healthcare Settings to Improve Diabetes Prevention and Care (R18)
The purpose of this Research Demonstration and Dissemination Projects (R18) Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support research to test approaches to improve diabetes treatment and prevention in existing healthcare settings. Applications are sought that test practical and potentially sustainable strategies, delivered in routine clinical care settings, to improve processes of care and health outcomes of individuals who are at risk for or have diabetes. The goal is that the research results will improve routine clinical practice and inform policy in representative healthcare settings.

T1D Exchange and M2D2 Diabetes Innovation Challenge Application Due Date
The Diabetes Innovation Challenge is sponsored by the T1D Exchange and the Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2) at UMass. The Challenge offers medical device and biotech entrepreneurs the chance to win in-kind awards and receive critical early and later-stage validation of their ideas and products specific to Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. The Diabetes Innovation Challenge is a proposal- and presentation-based competition for small companies in the T1 and T2 space that are making real progress towards better outcomes for those diagnosed.
