NIDDK Workshop: Chronic Kidney Diseases in Agricultural Communities

There has been a significant increase in the global burden of chronic kidney diseases of uncertain or non-traditional etiologies, primarily in agricultural communities. This condition has variously been referred to as chronic kidney disease of unknown (CKDu) or non-traditional etiology (CKDnt), chronic intersitital nephritis in agricultural communities (CINAC) and Mesoamerican nephropathy (MeN). Although the general presentation of this condition appears to be similar across affected regions, it remains unclear whether this condition represents one common disease or a syndrome of related ones that differ from affected region to region. A number of potential etiologies and pathophysiological mechanisms for this condition have been proposed, but significant debate exists regarding which factor(s) are the most important to the incidence and progression of chronic kidney diseases in these agricultural communities. We plan to bring together clinicians, basic scientists, epidemiologists, and public health officials to discuss the current gaps in knowledge and to develop a coordinated scientific research agenda leading to a better understanding of the causes and potential treatments of chronic kidney diseases in agricultural communities. Registration deadline: June 18, 2018.

Location: Bethesda, MD, USA

NIH Common Fund Funding Opportunity Letter of Intent Due Date: Cutting Edge Informatics Tools for Illuminating the Druggable Genome (U01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

The overarching goal of this FOA is to add informatics capabilities to the Common Fund program, Illuminating the Druggable Genome IDG; https://commonfund.nih.gov/idg/. The IDG consortium's purpose is to facilitate the unveiling of the functions of selected understudied proteins in the Druggable Genome using experimental and informatics approaches. Currently, this research consortium is composed of multiple Data and Resource Generation Centers (DRGCs), a Knowledge Management Center (KMC), and a Resource Dissemination and Outreach Center (RDOC).

The purpose of this specific FOA is to solicit applications to build a set of Cutting Edge Informatics Tools (CEITs) that will augment the capability of the KMC as well as the broader IDG Consortium in the following ways: (1) by developing and deploying tools to enhance the community's ability to process, analyze, and visualize IDG data, (2) to prioritize new data resources and methods to be incorporated into Pharos https://pharos.nih.gov/idg/index that will strengthen predictions about physiological and disease associations around the understudied proteins, and (3) by developing methods to prioritize understudied IDG families (non-olfactory GPCRs, protein kinases, and ion channels) for deeper study using experimental assays both within the IDG pipeline or by the larger community.
