dkNET Partners With the(sugar)science to Promote Scientific Research Tools

Partnership will further the understanding and use of dkNET resources to advance scientific research in digestive, diabetes, and kidney related diseases.

dkNET (NIDDK Information Network; https://dknet.org) and the(sugar)science (https://thesugarscience.org) are joining forces to promote the use of data in scientific research. The partnership will produce digital content aimed at educating researchers about the full range of dkNET resources and promoting their use in scientific research.

“We are delighted to be working with the(sugar)science to increase awareness of dkNET’s unique tools and services supporting Type 1 diabetes and related research”, said Maryann Martone, PhD, Principal Investigator at dkNET and Professor Emerita in the Department of Neuroscience at UCSD. Dr. Martone co-directs the FAIR Data Informatics Lab (FDI Lab; https://fdilab.org) with Dr. Jeffrey Grethe at the Qualcomm Institute in Atkinson Hall. “We’ve been so impressed with how the(sugar)science uses modern networking tools and approaches to provide an on-line hub for T1 diabetes researchers at all career stages”.

Recent mandates for FAIR data call for best practices to deliver data that is of use to the broader scientific community.  As part of its work on FAIR, dkNET is launching a new Hypothesis Center enabling data mining and hypothesis generation across FAIR ‘omics data. dkNET also aims to support early career scientists in developing their lines of inquiry through hypothesis development and a pilot award program.

“dkNET is a treasure trove of research tools and information just waiting for the larger scientific community to understand, access and embrace”, said Monica Westley, PhD, founder of the(sugar)science.  “We want to help get the word out to our connected scientific community across the globe to provide them best in class support for their research.”

Understanding and using these tools will universally increase ease of data analysis, help extract maximum benefit from research investments, and improve access to research resources that assist with scientific discovery. dkNETs focus is on end-to-end workflows, which reflects its understanding of “real world” cases.

The NIDDK Information Network (dkNET) serves the needs of basic and clinical investigators by providing seamless access to large pools of data and research resources relevant to the mission of the National Institute of Diabetes Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). dkNET is hosted at the University of California San Diego, and is supported by NIH NIDDK grant U24DK097771.

the(sugar)science is a dynamic, global, scientific community designed to advance the treatment and cure for Type 1 Diabetes.   It provides social networking and collaborative tools along with curated content, information, links, and events relevant to its scientific audience.  Striving to build a critical mass of global Type 1 Diabetes intelligence, the(sugar)science is a haven for T1D science.
